Overview
The SMS API allows you to send SMS messages to SIMs and retrieve SMS message logs programmatically.
This functionality mirrors the SMS capabilities available in the portal, enabling integration into your own platforms, applications or operational workflows.
Typical use cases include:
- Sending configuration commands to devices
- Triggering remote diagnostics
- Delivering security passcodes
- Sending operational alerts
- Monitoring message delivery status
Core Capabilities
The SMS API supports:
- Sending SMS to individual SIMs
- Sending SMS to multiple SIMs
- Sending different messages to different SIMs
- Retrieving SMS delivery logs
- Monitoring delivery status
Message Direction
Two message directions are supported:
- MT (Mobile Terminated) – Messages sent to a device via the portal or API
- MO (Mobile Originated) – Messages sent from a device and received by the portal
Only SMS traffic sent via the SIM Insight platform (portal or API) and replies received via the configured origination number are recorded in the SMS log.
Operational Considerations
- SMS can only be delivered to SIMs that are Active.
- Message delivery depends on network availability and device connectivity.
- Delivery status may be updated asynchronously.
- SMS functionality may vary by SIM type.
Before You Begin
Ensure that:
- The SIM type supports SMS functionality
- Devices are configured correctly for SMS replies (if applicable)
- Your API authentication credentials are valid
- You understand any applicable rate limits
